Before you start: what you can and can't bring over
Falafy is an independent app, not affiliated with Discord, and it does not import messages or servers from other apps. In practice, you rebuild the structure (channels, roles, rules) by hand, and your chat history stays where it is. The good news is that the structure is the small part: most friend or clan servers have fewer than 20 channels and a handful of roles.
- You can rebuild: categories, text and voice channels, the announcements channel, private channels, roles and permissions, rules, emoji, stickers, soundboard sounds and events.
- You can't bring over: message history, old attachments, Discord-specific bots and integrations that depend on the Discord API.
- An alternative for history: each person can request a copy of their own data in Discord's privacy settings. Important server messages (rules, useful links, guides) are worth copying and pinning in the new channel.
Take a 10-minute inventory
Open the old server and jot down, in a simple list:
- The categories and channels that actually had activity in the last month.
- The roles, in order of hierarchy, and what each one can do.
- The rules and pinned messages that need to come along.
- The bots in use and what they do (music, welcome messages, moderation, giveaways).
- Emoji and sounds that belong to your group.
This inventory prevents the most common mistake: copying everything, including the 15 dead channels nobody has opened since 2023.
Step by step
- 1Create your account and server
Install the app for Windows or Linux, or open falafy.com.br/app in your browser, sign up with your email and click Create server ("Criar servidor"). Start from scratch or use a template (Gaming squad "Squad de jogo", Work team "Time de trabalho", Study "Estudos" or Friends "Amigos") to get ready-made categories and channels.
- 2Rebuild categories and channels
Use the inventory you made on Discord and create the same categories, text channels, voice channels and announcements channel. It's a good moment to drop the channels nobody used.
- 3Rebuild roles and permissions
Create roles from the highest to the lowest (for example Admin, Moderator, Member) and tick only the permissions each one needs. Private channels get permissions per role or per person.
- 4Set up rules and moderation
Write the server rules (members can be asked to accept them when they join), turn on the word filter, the mention limit and slow mode where it makes sense.
- 5Upload emoji, stickers and sounds
Save the emoji and sounds from your old server that your group created and upload them to Falafy. Avoid uploading other people's material without permission.
- 6Create the invite link
Create an invite (falafy.com.br/i/CODE) and choose how long it lasts, how many times it can be used, the landing channel and the starting role. For open communities, consider join-by-request mode.
- 7Tell everyone on Discord
Post the invite in your Discord announcements channel, pin the message and explain why you're trying another app. Say what changes and what stays the same.
- 8Run both side by side for a while
Keep the old server open for a few weeks, schedule new events on Falafy, and only then turn Discord into an announcements channel or an archive.

How to get your group to give it a try
Moving a group is more social than technical. What usually works:
- Schedule an event in the new app. A game night or a test call gives everyone a concrete reason to show up on the same day.
- Show what they get. For many groups the pitch is simple: 1080p60 screen sharing with audio, no subscription required.
- Don't push it. Leave the old server open. People who like it stay; people who don't still know where to find the group.
- Agree on a backup plan. If one of the two apps goes down, everyone already knows where to go. See the guide what to do if Discord goes down or gets blocked.
Limitations to know up front
To decide honestly: Falafy runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and in the browser (including on phones, and on iPhone from the home screen), but it doesn't have phone apps in the app stores or console apps yet. Its bot ecosystem is small compared to Discord's. If your server depends on a very specific bot, test with your group first. The full list is on Features and the detailed comparison is in Falafy as a Discord alternative.
