A backup plan if Discord goes down: dealing with app outages and blocks in Brazil

Outages happen to every app, and Brazil has had messaging apps suspended by court order before. This guide is preventive and neutral: how to confirm what's going on, where to check official sources and how to stay in touch with your group.

By Falafy Team · Published · Updated

This guide is not about any specific case. It explains how to check for outages and how app blocks work in Brazil, with links to official sources. When in doubt, trust official sources, not forwarded messages.

Part 1: is Discord down?

Confirm with reliable sources

  • Official status page: discordstatus.com shows incidents and maintenance by component (voice, messages, API).
  • User reports: sites like Downdetector collect complaints and show whether the problem is widespread.
  • Discord's official social media accounts and its help center usually post notices during major outages.

Rule out problems on your end

  1. Try another network: if it works on mobile data but not on Wi-Fi, the problem may be your internet provider or your router.
  2. Quit the app completely and open it again; try the browser version.
  3. Restart your router and, if you know how, try another DNS server.
  4. Ask friends on other carriers whether they have the same problem.

What not to do

  • Don't download "alternative versions" or "fixes" for Discord from unknown sites.
  • Be wary of messages like "Discord is shutting down, join this link" or "free Nitro": scams take advantage of moments of confusion.
  • Never give your password or verification code to anyone who claims to be from support.

Part 2: how app blocks work in Brazil

In Brazil, an app is usually suspended by court order, based on laws such as the Marco Civil da Internet (Brazil's Internet Civil Rights Framework, Law 12.965/2014). The decision is sent to Anatel, the national telecom regulator, which instructs carriers and internet providers to enforce the block. It has happened to messaging apps and social networks, such as the temporary suspensions of WhatsApp in 2015 and 2016, the suspension of Telegram in 2023 and that of X (formerly Twitter) in 2024, the latter ordered by the Supremo Tribunal Federal (Brazil's Supreme Court).

A few things these cases showed:

  • Blocks can be quick and temporary. Some lasted hours or days and were reversed by another decision.
  • Reliable information comes from official sources: the court that issued the decision, Anatel and statements from the company itself.
  • Getting around a court order can have consequences. In the X case, the decision set a fine for anyone using a VPN to access the platform during the suspension. Inform yourself before doing anything.

Part 3: a backup plan that works

The best time to set up a backup plan is while everything is working. Once the main app stops, nobody can reach anybody.

  1. Agree on a second channel. It can be a group on another messaging app, a Falafy server, a TeamSpeak server or even an email list. What matters is that everyone knows which one.
  2. Keep the invite pinned. Pin the backup link in the rules or the announcements channel of your main server. On Falafy, an invite with no expiry and no usage limit works for this.
  3. Save what matters. Rules, useful links and contact details shouldn't live only inside one app. Each person can request a copy of their own data in Discord's privacy settings.
  4. Test it once. Schedule a quick call in the backup app. People who have never joined it won't manage to in the middle of an emergency.

Why Falafy can be your backup plan

Falafy is a Brazilian app, independent and free, with servers, voice and text channels and screen sharing. It is not affiliated with, associated with, authorized or endorsed by Discord Inc. It works on Windows, Linux and in the browser, including on phones, and you can create a server and an invite in two minutes. It can go down too, like any service; that's why the golden rule is to have an agreed backup plan, whatever it is. See how to rebuild your server on Falafy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if Discord is down for everyone?

Check the official discordstatus.com page and report aggregators like Downdetector. If you're the only one without access, try another network and restart the app.

Can an app be blocked in Brazil?

Yes, by court order. The decision is sent to Anatel, the telecom regulator, which instructs carriers. It has happened to WhatsApp, Telegram and X in different years.

Can I use a VPN if an app is blocked?

It depends on the decision. In the X case in 2024, the Supreme Court (STF) order set a fine for anyone using a VPN to access the platform. Check the official decision first.

What's the best backup plan?

Any channel your group agrees on in advance and has already tested: another messaging app, a server on Falafy or on TeamSpeak. What matters is that everyone knows where to go.
